Mortuary Must-Haves: A Comprehensive Equipment List
Outfitting a mortuary or funeral home means balancing budget against quality and reliability — and knowing which pieces of equipment you genuinely can't operate without. Use this as a practical procurement checklist, organized roughly by priority. (For a broader overview, see our essential funeral home equipment guide.)
When you are ready to compare products, browse our complete mortuary equipment catalog for refrigeration, preparation, transport, lifting, storage, pathology, cremation and funeral service equipment.
The core checklist
1. Refrigeration units
Non-negotiable, and in most states legally required for unembalmed remains held beyond 24 hours. Size to your peak caseload and choose a unit that holds a steady 36–39°F. Browse mortuary coolers or build one to spec with a custom cooler.
2. Embalming tables and machines
The workhorse of the prep room. Look for 304 stainless steel, integrated drainage, and adjustable height. See our embalming tables.
3. Lifting and transport
Mortuary trolleys, body lifts, and stretchers protect your staff from injury and let one person move remains safely. They pay for themselves in avoided back injuries.
4. Autopsy and dissection equipment
Required for facilities performing post-mortems — tables, instruments, and proper ventilation.
5. Disinfection and sanitation
Surface disinfectants, waste handling, and cleanable surfaces throughout the prep area keep you compliant with OSHA and public-health standards.
6. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection are inexpensive and essential for every facility.
How to prioritize on a budget
If you're building out in stages, start with refrigeration and a quality embalming table — the two items hardest to work around and most tied to compliance. Lifting equipment comes next for staff safety. Consumables (PPE, disinfectants, fluids) are ongoing costs to budget monthly. Buying quality once, from a manufacturer that stands behind the build, almost always costs less over time than replacing cheap equipment.
