Startup Guide — Self Contained Refrigeration Units (Quick Reference)

  1. Inspect packaging and unit for shipping damage before signing the bill of lading.
  2. Review the space and location requirements — indoor units require 50–100°F ambient, 2 ft service clearance above, ventilated space, no storage on top.
  3. Never place the evaporator section over doors or door openings.
  4. Verify the mounting surface is level (within 1°, no more than 5/8″ drop per 3 ft).
  5. Connect the supplied drain line to the drain port; add water to the condensate drain line to establish the P-trap liquid seal.
  6. Confirm drainage plan for your environment (see Condensate Drain Notice below).
  7. Plug into a dedicated grounded outlet — no extension cords, no adapters, never remove the grounding prong.
  8. Apply power; controls are preset to factory defaults on the Dixell XR40CH controller.
  9. Check the unit for proper operation and verify temperature pull-down to set point.

Important Installation Requirement: Condensate Drainage

This refrigeration system may require proper condensate drainage depending on the cabinet model, installation environment, indoor humidity level, run time, and site conditions.

P1 cabinet models are equipped with a 5/8″ external condensate drain line and do not provide internal condensate evaporation. P2 and P3 cabinet models include an internal re-evaporation pan; however, in high-humidity environments or applications with extended run times, condensate overflow may occur. In those conditions, the unit's 3/4″ NPT external drain connection should be connected to a suitable remote drain using a field-supplied condensate pump or external drain line.

Outdoor units require a field-piped drain line to manage and route condensate away from the unit. A "P" trap is located in the outdoor unit and must be maintained with a liquid seal. If the drain line runs through freezing weather conditions, it must be adequately sloped and equipped with a heated trace wire to prevent freezing and blockage.

Drainage, condensate routing, P-trap preparation, code compliance, and site readiness are the responsibility of the purchaser, installer, facility owner, plumber, HVAC/R contractor, or general contractor unless specifically included in writing by American Mortuary Coolers.

Failure to provide proper condensate drainage may result in water overflow, ice accumulation, nuisance alarms, operational interruption, property damage, or service issues. Damage, performance issues, or service calls resulting from improper drainage, site conditions, unlevel installation, clogged drain lines, missing condensate pumps, or failure to follow the installation manual are not considered product defects and are not covered as warranty claims.

Drainage Notice

This unit may require an external condensate drain or field-supplied condensate pump depending on humidity, run time, and installation conditions. Buyer/installer is responsible for reviewing the installation manual and confirming proper condensate drainage before operation. Improper drainage is not a product defect.

Due to the changing refrigerant models under new Freon regulations and updated guidelines, it is critical that you completely read all startup instructions before using your packaged refrigeration system. Do I require a drainage line?

Sometimes, yes. In higher humidity or high-temperature environments, or applications with extended run times, the installation manual calls for the external drain connection to be routed to a suitable drainage source or field-supplied condensate pump. Outdoor units always require a field-piped drain line.

What is an A2L refrigerant and is it safe?

A2L refrigerants are low-toxicity, mildly flammable, low-global-warming-potential refrigerants. They are UL listed for this equipment and safe when installed and serviced by qualified personnel per the manual.

Do indoor units need an external drain?

Indoor P1 cabinets use a 5/8″ external drain line and do not evaporate condensate internally. Indoor P2/P3 cabinets use an internal re-evaporation pan and use the 3/4″ NPT external drain in high-humidity or extended-run applications.

What is the re-evaporation pan?

What temperature should a mortuary cooler hold?

34–40°F for standard body holding. Mortuary freezers hold sub-zero temperatures for long-term storage.

What is the MRLDS-450 leak sensor?

An optional refrigerant leak detection system. When a leak is detected, the compressor turns off, the evaporator fan drops to low speed for air circulation, and defrost heaters turn off. A service technician must manually reset the controller.

What controller does the PRO³ use?
