Fixed vs. Elevating (Hydraulic) Autopsy Tables
The first decision is whether the table height is fixed or adjustable.
Fixed-height tables are welded assemblies with no moving parts. They are the least expensive option, have essentially nothing to maintain, and are appropriate where a single prosector or a stable team works at a consistent height. Standard working height is typically 34 to 36 inches.
Elevating tables use a hydraulic or electro-hydraulic column to adjust height, commonly through a range of roughly 24 to 40 inches. Height adjustment matters in three situations: multiple staff of different statures share the table; the facility transfers decedents from carts, lifts, or cooler trays at varying heights and wants to match transfer height to eliminate lifting; and photography or teaching requires lowering the surface. Electro-hydraulic models add foot-switch or hand-control operation. Elevating tables cost more and introduce a serviceable component, so facilities specifying them should confirm cylinder ratings, duty cycle, and parts availability in writing.
Weight capacity should be stated as a static working load, not a burst rating. For general service, specify at least 500 pounds; bariatric service justifies 1,000 pounds or more, on both the lift mechanism and the tabletop itself.
Pedestal vs. Perimeter-Drain Designs
Autopsy tables manage fluid in one of two basic geometries.
Pedestal (center-drain) tables mount on a single column with a dished or channeled top that slopes to a central or foot-end drain. The pedestal conceals supply and waste lines and gives the prosector clear knee and foot room on all sides. Pedestal tables usually require the drain rough-in to land within a fairly tight footprint under the column, so they are easiest to specify in new construction or full renovations.
Perimeter-drain tables use a raised outer channel that captures rinse water and fluids around the entire edge of the work surface, directing flow to one or two drain points, most often at the foot end. The perimeter channel keeps the central work surface flatter, which many prosectors prefer for evisceration and dissection, and it tolerates more variation in where the floor drain sits. Four-leg perimeter-drain tables are also simpler to level on uneven slabs.
Either geometry works well when the top maintains a continuous slope of roughly 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain with no ponding. Ask the manufacturer how slope is formed—pressed, braked, or weld-fabricated—and whether the top is sound-deadened.
Downdraft Ventilation and Formalin Exposure Control
Autopsy work generates aerosols, odors, and—wherever specimens are fixed at the table—formaldehyde vapor. Formaldehyde is regulated by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.1048, which sets a permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 0.75 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average, a 15-minute short-term exposure limit (STEL) of 2 ppm, and an action level of 0.5 ppm that triggers monitoring and medical surveillance obligations. Because formaldehyde vapor is slightly denser than room air and is released at the work surface, capture at or below the plane of the body is far more effective than ceiling exhaust alone. Options, in ascending order of capability:

- Downdraft tables: perforated or slotted surfaces pull air down and away from the prosector's breathing zone through an integral plenum, connected to building exhaust. Typical exhaust volumes run several hundred CFM per table; confirm the required CFM and static pressure with the manufacturer so your mechanical engineer can size the fan and ductwork.
- Back-draft or perimeter slot capture: slots along the table edge or a back wall capture vapor laterally; often combined with downdraft on ventilated workstations.

- Backflow prevention: vacuum breakers or backflow preventers on sprayers and aspirators are commonly required.
- Sink integration: foot-end sink modules combine a deep basin, gooseneck and sprayer faucets, and often a disposal unit for approved waste. An integrated sink shortens plumbing runs and keeps rinsing over a contained basin; a separate wall sink preserves table length in tight rooms.
