A mortuary lift is the piece of equipment that most directly determines whether body handling in your facility is a one-person task or a two-person injury risk. Lift Mechanisms: Scissor, Powered, and Manual Hydraulic
Scissor lifts
Scissor lifts raise a flat platform on crossed steel arms that extend as the platform rises. The geometry is compact, stable, and well suited to mortuary work because the platform stays level through the full travel range. Remember that a casket lift often carries the combined weight of casket and decedent. A heavy hardwood or bronze casket can weigh 200 to 400 pounds empty, so a 500-pound lift that is adequate for body transfers may be undersized for casket work. Rated capacity should also be understood as a working limit, not a target; running a lift at its maximum rating every day shortens the life of cylinders, actuators, and pivot pins. Lift Height Ranges
Travel range matters as much as capacity. The lift must go low enough to meet your lowest transfer surface and high enough to meet your highest one. Map the heights in your building before ordering:
- Lowered cot or church truck: roughly 24–36 inches
- Embalming and dressing tables: roughly 36–40 inches
- Second cooler tier: roughly 40–50 inches depending on rack design
- Third and fourth cooler tiers: 60–80 inches and above
Standard scissor tables typically travel from under 30 inches up to the 50–70 inch range; high-lift and dual-scissor designs reach the upper tiers of three- and four-tier racking. Casket lifts carry a wider, longer platform or support arms sized to casket dimensions, are rated for the higher combined weights described above, and emphasize stability and smooth, dignified motion because they are sometimes used in view of families, for example when placing a casket onto a bier or into a rental insert. Maintenance Basics
Lifts are simple machines and last for decades with modest care:
- Inspect hydraulic cylinders and hoses for weeping or drift; a platform that settles under load needs service before further use.
- Grease scissor pivots and check pins for wear on the schedule the manual specifies.
- Keep batteries on their charger regime and replace them at the first sign of reduced duty cycle.
- Test caster locks and inspect wheels for flat spots, especially on units that live inside coolers.
- Load-test annually at working weight and log the result; keep the rated-capacity placard legible.
