How to Clean and Care for a Stainless Steel Veterinary Exam Table
A simple routine for keeping a 304 stainless exam table clean between patients and looking new for years.
304 stainless steel is easy to keep clean, but the wrong cleaner or scrub pad can dull the finish and leave scratches that hold soil. This routine keeps a stainless veterinary exam table sanitary between patients and in good shape for years. Always follow your disinfectant's label for dilution and contact time.

Between every patient
- Remove hair and debris with a disposable towel.
- Clean with a mild detergent and water to lift organic soil. Disinfectants work best on a surface that is already clean.
- Apply your clinic's disinfectant and leave it wet for the full contact time on the label.
- Wipe the marine edge and corners, where fluid collects.
- Dry with a clean towel so water spots and residue do not build up.
Daily
- Wipe the sides, base, drawer fronts and toe-kick.
- On sink tables, clean the basin and faucet and run water through the drain.
- Check that feet are level and the table does not rock.
Weekly
- Clean the top with a stainless cleaner, wiping with the grain of the brushed finish.
- Rinse well to remove cleaner residue, then dry.
- Check drawer slides, casters or leveling feet, and the pull pins and hinges on wall-mount tables.
What to avoid
- Steel wool and abrasive pads, which scratch the surface and can leave iron particles that rust.
- Chlorine bleach left on the steel, which can pit stainless over time. If your protocol uses bleach, rinse and dry after the contact time.
- Letting disinfectant dry on the surface without rinsing, which leaves a film.
Base and storage
Full stainless bases can be cleaned like the top. Powder-coated bases wipe down with mild detergent; avoid harsh solvents that soften the coating. In wet rooms, a full stainless base lasts longer.
