How to Evaluate a 1,000-lb-Rated Mortuary Cot Before You Buy
A 1,000-lb rating on a mortuary cot is a claim, not a guarantee. Two cots with the same number on the spec sheet can behave very differently on a staircase at two in the morning. Before you spend four to five figures on bariatric removal equipment, here is what to check — and what to ask the manufacturer directly.
What a load rating actually certifies
Most published ratings are static ratings: the frame held that weight, evenly distributed, on a level surface, without permanent deformation. Real removals are dynamic. Weight shifts as the cot rolls over a threshold, tips into a van, or takes a stair descent with the load biased toward the foot end. A frame that holds 1,000 lb standing still can see effective loads well beyond that in motion.
There is no single mandatory test standard for mortuary cots the way there is for ambulance cots, so the honest question to ask any manufacturer — including us — is: what is the test basis for the rating? Static or dynamic? Whole-cot or component-level? Tested to failure, or to the rated load with a safety factor? A supplier who answers in specifics is telling you something; one who repeats the number back to you is telling you something too.
Frame material and weld points
Look at what the frame is made of and where it is joined. Aircraft-grade aluminum keeps a bariatric cot maneuverable, but the welds and cross-member junctions are where fatigue shows up first — typically at the undercarriage pivots and the points where the legs meet the deck rail. Inspect a demo unit if you can: continuous, cleaned welds and gusseted corners at load-bearing junctions are what you want to see. Ask whether the frame is a widened standard frame or a purpose-built bariatric chassis. Stretching a 550-lb design rarely doubles its real-world strength.
Deck width vs. patient width
A 1,000-lb rating on a 24-inch deck is a mismatch. Bariatric cases commonly present at 34 to 40 inches across, and a decedent overhanging the deck rails is both a dignity problem and a load-path problem — weight carried outside the frame rails stresses the structure in ways the rating never contemplated. Look for a genuinely widened deck and check the usable surface between rails, not the overall outside dimension. Wheels and casters: the hidden weak point
The frame rating gets printed in bold; the caster rating usually does not get printed at all. Four casters rated at 200 lb each give you an 800-lb rolling capacity under a 1,000-lb frame — and the first thing to fail will be a wheel, sideways, mid-transfer. Ask for the per-caster rating, the wheel diameter, and the bearing type. Larger-diameter wheels matter more on bariatric cots than anywhere else, because rolling resistance climbs with load and a cot that will not roll over a gravel driveway becomes a carry.
Height range and loading angle
Check the full height range — lowest transfer position to highest working position — and how the undercarriage behaves through it. A bariatric cot that only locks at two heights forces awkward lifts at every bed, floor, and table transfer. Loading angle matters just as much: the shallower the angle as the head-end wheels meet the van deck, the less of the load your crew is holding at the worst moment. Ask where the load actually sits on the operators during the load sequence, at rated weight, not empty in a showroom.
Van deck compatibility
Measure your vehicle before you order. Deck height from the ground, clear door opening, and the position of any existing fastener or antler system all determine whether a wider, heavier cot loads safely or fights you. A bariatric cot is wider at the wheelbase, and some van bed systems built around a 23-inch cot simply will not accept it. Warranty questions worth asking
Get the warranty in writing and read for three things: whether the frame and the undercarriage carry different terms, whether damage during bariatric use is excluded by weight language buried in the fine print, and who pays freight on a warranty repair for a 100-plus-lb cot. A five-year frame warranty with a one-year undercarriage term is telling you where the manufacturer expects trouble.
Price vs. replacement-cycle math
The cheapest 1,000-lb cot is rarely the cheapest per year of service. A cot that costs 30 percent less but needs caster and undercarriage work by year three, and replacement by year six, loses to a heavier-built unit that runs ten years on the same maintenance schedule — before you count the cost of a failure during a removal, which no spreadsheet fully captures. Price the cot over its expected service life, ask what the maintenance interval looks like at regular bariatric use, and weigh the standard-cot comparison honestly: if a 550-lb cot covers 95 percent of your calls, the bariatric unit is your second cot, not your only one.
