Rack Types: Side-Load, End-Load, Cantilever, and Roller

End-load racks

End-load racks are the most common configuration in reach-in coolers. The tray slides in from the door end, along the long axis of the body. Because the tray travels straight back, the cooler footprint can be narrow, typically around 3 feet wide per bay, but the room needs clear floor space in front of the door equal to the tray length plus working room for the operator and cot. End-load is the default choice when the cooler sits at the end of a hallway or against a wall with open floor in front of it.

Side-load racks

Side-load racks present the body broadside to the operator. The tray slides in perpendicular to the body's long axis, which shortens the required approach depth in front of the cooler. Side-load systems are useful in rooms where a full-length straight approach is not available, and they can make transfers from a cot or lift table easier because the operator works alongside the decedent rather than pushing from the feet or head. The trade-off is a wider cooler footprint.

Cantilever racks

Cantilever racks support each tray from a rear or side upright rather than from four corner posts. With no front posts in the way, the loading edge is completely open, which simplifies transfers from a hydraulic lift or cot and reduces the chance of pinching hands between tray and frame. Cantilever construction places significant moment loads on the upright and its anchors, so these systems are engineered as a unit; verify the per-tier rating rather than assuming it matches a four-post rack of similar appearance.

Roller racks

Roller systems add galvanized or stainless rollers, or full roller conveyor sections, to each tier so the tray glides rather than drags. Rolling resistance matters more than most buyers expect: sliding a loaded tray on static angle rails can require a hard pull, while the same tray on rollers moves with a fraction of the effort. For facilities handling higher case weights or high daily volume, roller tiers are one of the most cost-effective ergonomic upgrades available.

Tier Counts and Capacity Math

Capacity planning starts with vertical math. A typical cooler interior offers roughly 72 to 78 inches of usable rack height. Each occupied tier needs the tray thickness plus clearance for the decedent and for hands during loading; most systems allocate 20 to 24 inches per tier. That yields the familiar configurations:

Fixed vs. Mobile Racking

Fixed racks bolt to the cooler floor or wall and never move. They are the least expensive option, have no wheels to fail, and keep every position in a known location. Their limitation appears in walk-in coolers: a fixed layout defines your aisles permanently.

Mobile racks ride on heavy casters so an entire loaded rack can roll out of the cooler for loading, cleaning, or reorganization. In walk-in installations, mobile racks let you compress storage when volume is low and reconfigure when it spikes. They also move the loading task out of the confined, refrigerated space and into the open prep area. Tray Materials: Stainless, HD Plastic, and Laminated Boards

Stainless steel

Type 304 stainless remains the reference standard. It is nonporous, tolerant of every common disinfectant, rigid at long spans, and effectively permanent. Weight is the main drawback; a full-size stainless tray adds meaningful mass to every transfer, which is another argument for roller tiers. Look for hemmed or rolled edges, which stiffen the pan and remove sharp lips.

Heavy-duty plastic

Rotomolded or thermoformed polyethylene trays weigh far less than steel, will not corrode, and are quiet in use. Quality varies widely: a thin tray can flex alarmingly under a heavy decedent, so check the manufacturer's rated load and the support spacing it assumes. Plastic scratches over time, and scratched surfaces are harder to disinfect thoroughly, so plan on periodic replacement in high-throughput settings.

Laminated boards

Laminated or composite mortuary boards are an economical option often used with cot-height storage or as transfer surfaces. They are light and inexpensive but less durable under repeated washdown, and edge sealing is critical; once moisture penetrates the core, the board should be retired. They suit low-volume firms and backup capacity better than daily institutional use.

Matching Racks to Cooler Interior Dimensions

Racks must be specified against the cooler's interior, not its nominal exterior size. Measure or confirm four numbers: clear interior width, depth, height, and door opening. Wall and ceiling panel thickness on a walk-in commonly takes 4 to 6 inches off each exterior dimension. Then verify that the evaporator coil and its drip pan do not intrude into the top tier's clearance, that door hardware does not block tray travel, and that the tray length, typically 76 to 90 inches for standard and oversize trays, fits the interior depth with room to maneuver. Loading Ergonomics and Safety

  • Keep routine loading between knee and chest height. The second tier of a three-tier rack is the easiest working level; reserve top tiers for longer-term holding.

  • Prefer rollers over static rails wherever budget allows, and keep them clean so they spin freely.

  • Maintain clear approach paths. Cot and lift wheels need flat, unobstructed floor from the prep area to the rack face.
