Prep Room Layout and Embalming Station Planning Guide for Funeral Homes
A prep room that works well is rarely an accident. Whether you are building new, renovating an existing funeral home, or converting a space, the decisions you make about workflow zones, table placement, drainage and ventilation determine how safely and efficiently your staff work for the next twenty years. This guide walks through the planning sequence in the order most architects and equipment suppliers address it. It is general planning guidance — always confirm requirements with your state board of funeral service, local plumbing and building codes, and OSHA regulations before finalizing a design.
Start With Workflow Zones, Not Equipment
Before placing any single piece of equipment, map the path a decedent follows through the room. A functional prep room has four zones, even when they overlap in a small space:
- Receiving. Where the cot enters from the garage or removal entrance. This zone needs a door wide enough for a loaded cot (36 inches minimum; 42–48 inches is more comfortable) and a clear path that does not cross the embalming zone.
- Embalming. The table, water control station, instrument storage and chemical storage. This is the contamination-control core of the room.
- Dressing and cosmetics. A separate dressing table area keeps casketing and cosmetic work away from active embalming, which matters for both hygiene and scheduling when two cases are in process.
- Refrigerated storage. The mortuary cooler, ideally adjacent to both the receiving path and the embalming zone so transfers are short and level.
Sketch these zones on the floor plan first. If the cot path from receiving to cooler crosses the embalming table workspace, rework the layout before you commit to plumbing locations.
Embalming Table Placement and Clearances
The embalming table is the anchor of the room, and clearance around it is the specification most often shorted in small rooms.
- Working clearance: plan for at least 24–30 inches of clear space on each long side of the table, and 36 inches is better on the embalmer's primary working side. Staff need to circle the table completely.
- Head end: the head of the table should sit near the water control unit and drainage point, with room for the embalmer to work seated or standing.
- Transfer clearance: leave enough room at one end or side to bring a cot or lift parallel to the table for transfer. A cot is roughly 80 inches long; a parallel transfer needs a lane at least that long plus maneuvering room.
- Multiple tables: in multi-table rooms, allow a minimum of 4 feet between adjacent tables so two embalmers can work simultaneously without sharing a lane.
Choose the table before finalizing plumbing. Fixed-height, hydraulic and electric-lift tables have different footprints and drain positions. Current options are listed in our embalming tables collection.
Water Control Units and Drainage
The water control station supplies the aspirator and rinse functions and manages waste water. Planning points:
- Location: mount the water control unit at the head end of the table, within hose reach but out of the embalmer's elbow path. Wall-mounted units keep the floor clear; pedestal units suit rooms where the table sits away from walls.
- Supply: hot and cold supply with backflow prevention as required by your plumbing code. Many jurisdictions require a specific backflow device on prep room fixtures — confirm with your plumbing inspector.
- Drainage: a floor drain near the table's discharge point, trapped and vented per code. Some municipalities require connection to sanitary sewer with specific pretreatment; septic-served properties need particular attention. Verify local wastewater rules early, because they can drive the entire room location.
- Slope: floor should slope gently to the drain (commonly around 1/4 inch per foot near the drain) without creating a trip or rolling hazard for cots and lifts.

Ventilation and Formaldehyde Exposure Control
Formaldehyde is regulated by OSHA under 29 CFR 1910.1048, which sets a permissible exposure limit of 0.75 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average and a short-term exposure limit of 2 ppm over 15 minutes. Ventilation is the primary engineering control that keeps a prep room under those limits. General planning principles:
- Downdraft or low exhaust: formaldehyde vapor is best captured low and near the source. Exhaust grilles placed low on the wall near the table, or downdraft-ventilated tables, remove vapor before it rises through the embalmer's breathing zone.
- Air changes: mechanical ventilation sized by a qualified HVAC engineer for the room's volume and use; prep rooms are commonly designed with substantially higher air-change rates than office space, with 100 percent exhaust to outside and no recirculation.
- Makeup air: exhausted air must be replaced; plan supply air so the room stays at slight negative pressure relative to adjacent public areas.
- Monitoring: OSHA requires initial exposure monitoring for formaldehyde in most cases; keep records and re-monitor after any ventilation change.
This is an area to involve a licensed mechanical engineer familiar with funeral home work. The cost of doing it correctly at construction is far lower than retrofitting.
Flooring and Washdown Surfaces
Every surface in the embalming zone should tolerate daily chemical exposure and washdown. Common practice:
- Seamless flooring — sealed epoxy or similar resinous systems — with an integral cove base carried several inches up the wall, so there is no floor-to-wall seam to trap fluids.
- Slip resistance balanced against cleanability; heavily textured floors are harder to disinfect, glass-smooth floors are hazardous when wet.
- Washable wall surfaces (epoxy-painted, FRP panel or glazed tile) at least in the splash zone around the table and sinks.
- Sealed, moisture-rated lighting and GFCI-protected receptacles per electrical code.
Cooler Adjacency and Transfer Planning
The single biggest ergonomic win in prep room design is a short, level path between the cooler and the table. When planning cooler placement:
- Locate the cooler on the receiving path so intake goes cot-to-cooler without passing through the embalming zone.
- Match heights: roll-in coolers that accept trays at cot height eliminate one lift per transfer. If you use an upright cooler with multiple tiers, plan for a lift to reach upper positions.
- Leave a full cot length of clear floor in front of the cooler door, plus door swing.
- Confirm electrical supply and condensate drainage for the unit's location, and ventilation for the condensing unit if it is indoors.

Dressing Table and Lift Positioning
The dressing area needs enough clearance to position a casket beside the dressing table, plus room for a casket lift or church truck to maneuver. A body and casket lift reduces two-person manual transfers to a controlled mechanical move; plan a parking position for it that does not block the cot path, and check the lift's turning footprint against your aisle widths. In many funeral homes the dressing zone doubles as the casketing area, so locate it near the door that leads to the selection room or chapel.
Small Rooms Versus Multi-Table Rooms
Single-table rooms
In a room under roughly 200 square feet, zones overlap by necessity. Priorities in order: full working clearance around the table, a legal and functional drainage/ventilation setup, and a cooler transfer path that does not require rotating a cot in place. Wall-mounted water control, corner-positioned instrument storage and a roll-in cooler directly adjacent to the prep room preserve floor space.
Multi-table rooms
Rooms serving two or more tables should separate the receiving/cooler traffic lane from the embalming lanes entirely, give each table its own water control drop and low exhaust, and provide a shared dressing zone sized for casket access. Trade schools and high-volume firms should also plan instrument sanitation and chemical storage as their own stations rather than sharing table-side space.
