The Dixell XR40CH Controller: Setting and Reading Your Mortuary Cooler Temperature

How to read the set-point, change temperature, run a manual defrost, and interpret alarms on the Dixell XR40CH controller used across packaged mortuary cooler refrigeration.

Every packaged PRO³ system on an AMC upright mortuary cooler ships with the Dixell XR40CH digital controller, preset to factory defaults. Here's the operator's short course.

Daily operations

  • See the set-point: press and release SET — the display shows the target.
  • Change the set-point: hold SET 2+ seconds until the °F LED blinks, adjust with UP/DOWN within 10 seconds, press SET again to store. Standard body holding is 34–40°F.
  • Manual defrost: hold DEF 2+ seconds.
  • Lock the keyboard: hold UP+DOWN 3 seconds ("PoF" displays); same combo unlocks ("Pon").

Reading alarms

Alarm codes flash alternating with temperature. "HA"/"LA" are max/min temperature alarms that self-clear when temperature normalizes; "P1–P4" are probe faults — check connections before replacing probes; "dA" means the door is open. Persistent alarms after temperature recovery warrant a service call from a licensed tech.

Don't tune blind

Defrost type, intervals, and termination temperatures are preset per application (medium-temp air defrost on standard coolers). Parameter changes in the hidden menu should follow the manual — wrong defrost settings show up as ice on the ceiling or a coil that never clears. The full controller section, parameter tables, and wiring diagrams are on our Packaged Refrigeration Manuals & Startup Guide.

Want 24/7 remote temperature records on top of the controller? That's what HALO monitoring adds — audit-ready compliance documentation with instant alerts.
