Custom Stainless Steel Cabinetry for Anatomy & Forensic Labs — AMC 3500 Series Guide

4 min read

When Standard Products Are Not Enough

Most pathology labs and anatomy departments have at least some spaces that cannot be efficiently served by standard catalog casework. An irregularly shaped room, a non-standard utility rough-in location, a workflow requirement that demands a specific counter configuration, or simply the desire to build a cohesive, purpose-designed lab environment that every element fits together perfectly — these are the circumstances that lead facilities to custom casework.

AMC's custom stainless steel cabinetry program provides fully custom-manufactured casework for anatomy labs, forensic pathology facilities, morgues, and preparation rooms. Every dimension, configuration, and detail is specified for the particular installation. See our custom stainless steel casework and cabinetry product page and our stainless steel lab casework design guide for broader context.

The Custom Design Process: From Concept to Installation

Phase 1: Requirements Gathering

The custom casework design process begins with a thorough requirements gathering session. AMC's design team will work with your facility manager, pathology director, anatomy lab coordinator, or project architect to document:

  • Room dimensions and layout (provide floor plan with dimensions and utility locations)
  • Utility rough-in locations: water supply, drain, electrical, exhaust duct
  • Workflow description: who works in the space, what activities occur, what supplies are staged
  • Storage requirements: types and volumes of supplies to be stored
  • Ergonomic requirements: working heights, height adjustment needs
  • Compliance requirements: specific regulatory or accreditation standards affecting casework

Phase 2: Design Development

Based on requirements, AMC's design team develops a casework configuration proposal with dimensional drawings. The proposal includes plan views, elevations, and section details sufficient to confirm fit-out dimensions, utility connections, and storage configurations. Design iterations are normal — the goal is a configuration that the facility team can confirm will support the intended workflow before manufacturing begins.

Phase 3: Manufacturing

Once the design is approved, AMC's manufacturing team produces the custom casework at our Johnson City, Tennessee facility. All stainless steel components are fabricated, finished, and assembled under quality control procedures consistent with AMC's A+ BBB rating and 7,500+ customer track record.

Phase 4: Delivery and Installation

Custom casework is delivered and installed by AMC's installation team on qualifying orders under the FREE Level 2 White-Glove Installation program. AMC coordinates delivery sequencing (casework must arrive after flooring and before final finishes in new construction), positions and anchors casework in the space, and verifies utility connections. The facility's licensed plumber and electrician complete utility connections at casework rough-in points.

Custom Configurations for Anatomy Labs

Dissection Table Surrounds

Anatomy dissection table areas benefit from custom casework that integrates supply storage, specimen staging surfaces, and sink access around the perimeter of each dissection table position. Custom casework designed around AMC's electric and manual immersion dissection tables creates a complete, organized workstation at each table position.

Instructor Demonstration Areas

Anatomy labs typically include a dedicated instructor demonstration area — a raised table with surround storage and display equipment for instructor-led demonstrations. Custom casework in the demonstration area supports the specific equipment and workflow of this distinct lab function.

Specimen Processing Areas

Specimen processing — the area where donated bodies are received, prepared for preservation, and documented — benefits from custom casework that integrates intake documentation stations, preservation fluid management, and preparation surface with appropriate utility connections. See our anatomy lab dissection equipment complete setup guide for broader anatomy lab planning guidance.

Custom Configurations for Forensic Labs

Evidence Management Stations

Forensic pathology and crime labs require evidence management workstations where specimens are logged, packaged, and staged for chain-of-custody transfer. Custom casework for evidence management integrates documentation work surfaces, secure storage, packaging material storage, and appropriate sink access in a configuration that supports chain-of-custody workflow.

Toxicology Sample Processing Areas

Toxicology sample processing requires casework that accommodates sample tube racks, centrifuge equipment, analytical instrument integration, and hazardous waste management. Custom casework for toxicology areas is designed with the specific instrument footprints and utility requirements of the analytical equipment in use.

Material and Finish Specifications

All AMC custom casework uses 304 stainless steel with #4 brushed finish as the standard specification. For facilities using high-chloride disinfectants (bleach at high concentration, chlorinated cleaners), 316 stainless steel is available at premium. The #4 brushed finish provides the optimal balance of cleanability (no deep scratches that harbor bacteria) and scratch concealment (new scratches blend with the existing brushed pattern). See our morgue lab work tables and storage guide for additional material guidance.
