Decedent refrigeration maintains 36–39°F for routine holds and 0°F or below for long-term preservation. Self-contained units have an integrated compressor; walk-in systems use a remote or top-mount condensing unit sized to the room. The goal is stable temperature regardless of how often doors open or how warm the room gets.

Plug-in upright and vault coolers carry their own refrigeration and deploy fast. Walk-in rooms use a separate compressor pack matched to volume and ambient conditions. Larger facilities sometimes specify redundant or backup refrigeration so a single failure never thaws a full morgue.
