To reduce lifting in a funeral home, map every point where staff support body weight — removal, van, prep table, cooler, casket — then eliminate each one with height-matched equipment, starting where injuries are most likely per dollar spent. For most firms that means the cooler transfer first, then the removal cot.

Step one: audit your lift points

Walk a case through your building on paper and write down every moment a person holds weight. A typical firm finds five:

  • Removal. Floor, bed, or recliner to cot. Worst when the death is on a floor or in a bathroom.
  • Van. Cot into and out of the vehicle. Twice per case, often solo, often at night.
  • Prep table. Cot or tray to embalming table and back.
  • Cooler. Cot to rack shelf — the highest and most awkward lift in most buildings, especially second and third tiers.
  • Casket. Table to casket, a long horizontal reach over a rail with nowhere good to stand.

For each point, note the height change, the typical staffing, and whether it has ever produced a strain, a near-miss, or a complaint. That list is your purchase order, in draft form.

The regulatory and physical reality

OSHA has no specific lifting standard for funeral homes, but the General Duty Clause still applies: employers must keep the workplace free of recognized hazards likely to cause serious harm. Repeated manual lifting of decedents is exactly the kind of recognized hazard that clause covers, and it is what an inspector or a plaintiff's attorney will point to after an injury.

The physics is blunter than the law. The NIOSH lifting equation sets 51 lb as the recommended limit for one person under ideal conditions — load close to the body, good grip, no twisting. Decedent handling violates every one of those conditions, which pushes the real safe limit well below 51 lb. Set that against a 180 lb average decedent, or a 350 lb bariatric case, and the conclusion is not subtle: there is no staffing level at which manual decedent lifting complies with the math. Two people lifting 180 lb are each over the limit. Four people cannot coordinate around a cot. Equipment is not an upgrade to a manual process; it is the only version of the process that works on paper.

Prioritize by injury risk per dollar

Few firms can re-equip everything at once. Rank purchases by how much injury exposure each dollar removes.

Priority one usually lands between the cost of one urn inventory restock and the deductible on one back claim. Train the workflow, not just the equipment

Equipment fails when staff route around it. Training does not need to be elaborate; it needs to be specific and repeated.

  • Write the transfer sequence as a one-page procedure per lift point: heights to set, who stands where, what slides when. Laminate it, post it at the cooler.
  • Set a hard staffing rule with numbers: for example, no solo handling above the cot's solo-rated load, and no manual lift of any amount when the equipment is available. Rules with numbers get followed; "use good judgment" does not.
  • Practice with the equipment empty, then weighted, before the first real case. Ten minutes with a 200 lb training load finds the height mismatches while they are still free to fix.
  • Log strains and near-misses, even minor ones. Two complaints about the same lift point in a quarter means that point moves up the purchase list.
