Lighting inside a walk-in cooler is a regulated detail most buyers never think to ask about — and a quiet operating cost they pay every month. All AMC walk-in cooler models are built to a high-efficiency LED lighting standard. Here is exactly what that means.
Federal Department of Energy energy-conservation standards for walk-in coolers and freezers set efficacy requirements for walk-in lighting — requirements that legacy incandescent and fluorescent fixtures cannot meet in new equipment. Every AMC walk-in ships with LED fixtures as the standard specification across all models. No model in the walk-in line uses incandescent or fluorescent lighting.
Every watt a light fixture burns inside a refrigerated box must also be removed by the refrigeration system — so inefficient lighting costs you twice. LED fixtures cut both the lighting load and the heat load on the compressor. They start instantly at full brightness in cold ambient (where fluorescents dim and lag), deliver tens of thousands of service hours so ladder-and-relamp maintenance inside a cold box nearly disappears, and provide clean, high-CRI illumination for case identification, intake documentation, and chain-of-custody work where seeing clearly is not optional.
Walk-in models include sealed, surface-mount LED fixtures rated for cold, damp-location interiors, switched at the entry. Additional fixtures, interior switching layouts, or facility-specified fixture models can be configured on any walk-in — state the requirement on your RFQ and it is quoted in writing.
DOE standards apply to walk-in components and equipment classes; your electrician and AHJ govern the building-side wiring, and any state energy code requirements beyond the federal baseline (such as California Title 24) are verified by the buyer. We document the lighting specification on your quote so your facility file is complete. See our companion page on EPA & DOE Compliant Refrigeration and our Compliance & Operating Conditions policy.
