Refrigerant regulation has changed more in the last five years than in the previous thirty. Under the EPA's AIM Act phasedown of high-GWP HFC refrigerants, new commercial refrigeration is transitioning to low-global-warming-potential refrigerants — including the A2L class. This page explains, transparently, how our cooler refrigeration is built and specified to comply.

Self-contained systems

Our self-contained mortuary coolers ship as factory-charged, factory-sealed refrigeration packages built on EPA-compliant refrigerants — current platforms run R-448A, a low-GWP HFO blend that replaced legacy R-404A across commercial refrigeration, with low-GWP A2L refrigerants specified where the platform calls for them. A2L refrigerants are classified as lower-flammability and are engineered into purpose-built, leak-monitored system designs — they are the regulatory direction of the entire commercial refrigeration industry, not an exotic choice. The refrigerant designation for your specific unit is stated on the data plate and on your quote.

Remote condensing systems

Walk-in coolers with remote condensing units are charged and commissioned in the field by your EPA Section 608-certified refrigeration contractor. Remote systems are likewise specified on R-448A or the low-GWP refrigerant matched to the condensing unit on your project and the rules in force at install — we coordinate the line-set, charge, and refrigerant specification with your installer so the system commissions compliant. Field handling, recovery, and leak-repair obligations under EPA Section 608 rest with the certified technician servicing the system.

DOE energy conservation standards

Walk-in coolers and freezers are federally regulated equipment under Department of Energy energy-conservation standards for walk-in coolers and freezers (WICF) — covering panel insulation values, door construction, and refrigeration system efficiency. Our walk-in panels, doors, and refrigeration packages are specified to the standards applicable to the equipment class on your order. Equipment compliance details are documented on your quote so your facility file is complete.

Transparency on compliance

Refrigerant and efficiency rules vary by equipment class, charge size, install date, and — in some cases — state (California CARB and several states run ahead of federal timelines). We state the refrigerant and applicable standard on your quote in writing; verifying state-level requirements for your jurisdiction is the buyer's responsibility, and we will configure to any written requirement you provide.
