Replacing an Existing Morgue Cooler
Replacing an aging morgue cooler is one of the most common procurement scenarios AMC handles. Whether your current unit is failing, undersized, or simply outdated, the replacement process has a few key steps that will save you time, money, and compliance headaches.
Before You Order a Replacement
Measure the opening, not the unit. If your old morgue cooler is being replaced in an existing space, the replacement must fit through the door and into the room. Get the room dimensions and doorway clearance before comparing models. Many upright mortuary coolers have an assembled width of 36–48 inches and ship on a pallet.
Check your power supply. Upright units run on 115V. If your old unit was 115V, a direct swap is straightforward. If you’re upgrading to a walk-in or a 6-body+ unit, confirm your panel capacity. See the Electrical Planning Guide.
Assess the floor. If you’re upgrading from an upright to a walk-in morgue cooling system, the floor slab must meet load and flatness requirements. See: Floor & Slab Requirements.
Upgrading Your Capacity
If you’re replacing an undersized unit, this is the time to size correctly. Calculate peak body volume (not average) and add a 20% buffer. See our Mortuary Cooler Sizing Guide.
What to Do With the Old Unit
AMC does not take trade-ins, but older working units can often be sold to smaller funeral homes, shipped internationally, or donated to mortuary science programs. Contact your state funeral board association for referrals.
Replacement Lead Times
AMC upright replacements typically ship in 3–6 weeks. For same-configuration replacements with available in-stock units, lead time can be shorter. See: Lead Times & Expedited Delivery.
