Funeral Home Architects & Planners: Prep Room Casework Specifications and Design Support
Specification notes, cabinet dimensions, utility coordination and submittal support for embalming rooms, preparation rooms and care centers. American Mortuary Equipment supplies the casework, tables, stations and coolers on one schedule, and USPE fabricates the casework to the same construction used in pathology and anatomy laboratories.
What we provide for drawings and specifications
Specification notes for preparation room casework
Construction
Specify stainless steel casework at the wet wall, sink bases and instrument storage, and stainless or 18-gauge powder-coated steel elsewhere. All cabinets are built to order from the configurations in USPE-CW-CFG-001 Rev C, with fillers, scribes, finished back panels and service chases from USPE-CW-ACC-001 Rev C.
Finish and hardware
Call out color tier and code for body and door or drawer fronts (USPE-CW-FIN-001 Rev C) and hinge and pull codes (USPE-CW-HDW-001 Rev C). Recessed pulls are recommended beside the table and in aisles narrower than the cot path.
Clearances and workflow
Fix the embalming table, cooler door swing and cot path before locating casework. Keep return-air grilles, floor drains and the water control unit clear of cabinet runs, and separate clean storage (tall and wall cabinets) from soiled and waste storage (specialty cabinets) by location.
Code and engineering
Exhaust, ventilation rates, plumbing, electrical and accessibility are designed by the project engineer and reviewed by the authority having jurisdiction. We provide product dimensions and utility requirements; we do not provide stamped drawings or code compliance opinions.
Project types
- Funeral home renovations replacing wood or laminate prep room cabinets with stainless or powder-coated steel.
- New funeral homes and care centers where the prep room, dressing room and cooler are designed together.
- Central preparation facilities serving multiple locations, with several tables and large casework runs.
- Mortuary science programs, county and hospital morgues that need the same casework in an institutional setting; USPE also supplies the autopsy and pathology equipment for those rooms.
How the process works
- Send the backgroundPDF or DWG floor plan, or a dimensioned sketch, with the owner's equipment list and case volume.
- Receive the layout and schedulePlan and 3D layout, cabinet schedule and a budget quote for the casework and equipment package.
- Iterate with the ownerRevisions to the layout, finishes and equipment are normal and carry no design fee.
- Submittal and releaseFinal cabinet schedule, finish selections and delivery access confirmed in the written quote and purchase order.
Documents
Complete the room with AME tables, stations and AMC coolers
Casework is only one wall. The same quote can carry the embalming table, the sink or flushing station, the cooler and the lifts, so the layout is drawn once and the freight is planned once.
