Gross Anatomy Equipment for Universities — What Every Program Needs
Outfitting a university gross anatomy program or upgrading an existing one involves a broader equipment list than most departments expect. This post covers every equipment category a university gross anatomy lab requires, with specific product recommendations for each.
1. Anatomy Dissection Tables
The dissection table is the centerpiece of the gross anatomy lab. For most U.S. medical schools using formalin-embalmed donors, the flat-surface stainless dissection table with optional drawers is the standard configuration. Programs using Thiel or fresh tissue protocols need immersion tables. Pedestal tables (electric height adjustment) are preferred for faculty and resident use.

2. Cadaver Storage Coolers
University anatomy programs store donors in walk-in cadaver coolers between dissection sessions. A 10×16 walk-in cadaver cooler with 4-tier racks stores 16–24 donors. Larger programs use a 10×20 walk-in. Immersion protocol programs may also need a long-term anatomy freezer for extended holds.

3. Cadaver Rack Systems
Walk-in cadaver coolers for university programs use high-density rack systems for storage. AMC’s 4-tier side-loading racks and cantilever racks are standard configurations. Built to AMC cooler interior dimensions, custom-configured to your program.

4. Anatomy Lab Sinks & Water Control
Every gross anatomy lab requires proper drainage infrastructure at the dissection station. AMC’s Water Control Unit is standard in anatomy lab builds. The 4-Station Foot Pedal Scrub Sink is the standard multi-student handwashing sink. See: Anatomy Lab Sinks Hub.
5. Specimen Storage & Casework
Preserved specimen storage, instrument organization, and supply cabinetry complete the anatomy lab. USPE offers custom stainless casework and standard stainless storage cabinets. See: Specimen Storage Hub.
6. Donor Transport Equipment
Anatomy programs handling donor intake require mortuary cots for body removal, cadaver stretcher carts for in-lab movement, and covered transport carts for dignified movement. See: Cadaver Transport Equipment for Anatomy Labs.
