Walk-In Cooler Installation Checklist: Site Prep, Power, and Delivery
A walk-in cooler installation goes smoothly when the site is ready before the truck arrives — and turns expensive when it is not. This is the checklist we walk every buyer through at American Mortuary Coolers, from the day you order to the day the room pulls down to 34–38°F.
Before You Order
Measure the path of travel. Panels are large — confirm doorways, hallways, stairwells, and ceiling height along the route to the install location. Confirm the footprint. Use the dimensions on the product page (remember: 16-foot nominal panels are 15′8″ actual on our 10×16, 16×16, 16×20, 16×24, and 14×16 freezer). Place the door with intent. The Build-It-Out configurator gives you four precise door locations, right or left hinge, and 36″ or 48″ sizes — set it to match your cot workflow and rack plan. If you have not sized the room yet, start with the capacity guide and the walk-in fridge sizes guide.
Site Preparation
Level surface. Panels assemble on a level concrete pad or structural floor — out-of-level slabs cause door and gasket problems for the life of the unit. Floor decision. Floorless models seal to the slab; the insulated floor option adds efficiency and lets you add the ramp option for smooth cot access. Clearances. Leave the airflow clearance around the condensing unit specified on your model page, and keep the room out of direct sun or high ambient heat where practical — or spec a higher refrigeration level for the conditions. Condensate. Plan the condensate drain path before assembly day.
Electrical
Refrigeration requirements vary by model and level — many of our self-contained systems run on standard household-style power, while larger Level 3–4 systems need dedicated circuits. The exact electrical spec is on every product page; have a licensed electrician run the circuit before delivery so startup happens the same day the panels go up.
Delivery Day
Walk-ins ship nationwide as panel kits via freight carrier — large formats under flat-rate delivery tiers, so there are no freight surprises. Delivery is curbside: plan equipment and hands to move panels inside. Inspect every panel before signing and note any carrier damage on the bill of lading. Local pickup is always available at our Johnson City, TN plant if you prefer to skip freight entirely.
Assembly and Startup
Panels join with cam-lock construction — most rooms assemble in one to two days. Check the door swing and gasket seal, start the refrigeration, and verify pull-down to 34–38°F on the digital controller. Log temperatures through the first 48 hours, then load racks and go to work. Ask us about remote temperature monitoring if you want alerts on your phone around the clock.
The Complete Picture
Installation is one chapter — the Walk-In Cooler Buying Guide covers sizing, real 2026 pricing, refrigeration levels, and every build-out option across all 33 models in the walk-in collection.
