When it comes to choosing a mortuary cooler, size matters. Too small and you're turning cases away or stacking remains; too large and you've tied up budget and floor space you didn't need. Here's how to size a cooler to your operation — now and a few years out.

Start with your current volume

The biggest factor is how many remains you typically hold at once. A small funeral home or crematory may be well served by an upright or roll-in cooler that holds one to three bodies. Higher-volume operations, or those serving hospitals and county contracts, usually need a walk-in cooler with rack capacity for nine or more. Size for your busiest stretch, not your quiet weeks — the capacity you don't have when you need it is the expensive kind.

Work within your space

Measure the room before you shop. If floor space is tight, a shelved upright unit or a compact roll-in gives you real capacity without a full room build-out. Walk-ins deliver the most storage but need the footprint and door clearance to match.

Plan for future needs

If you expect your caseload to grow, buy for that future now. Stepping up one size at purchase is far cheaper than replacing a unit in two years, and it spares you the disruption of a second installation. Whatever you choose, buy from a manufacturer that stands behind the build.
