2- to 15-Body Mortuary Refrigerator Capacity Chart
Mortuary refrigerators are named by how many bodies they hold: a two-body refrigerator, a three-body, and so on up to fifteen-body vault systems and walk-ins. This chart lists every American Mortuary Coolers configuration by body count, with its loading style and published dimensions, so you can shortlist by capacity and room before requesting a quote.

Choosing a format at each size
2 to 4 bodies
Uprights are the compact choice: an 89″ deep footprint, a plug-in 115V system and front-door loading onto roller tiers. Choose the X (44″) cabinet for bariatric cases. The 4BX is the only 4-body upright and is built on that bariatric cabinet. Choose roll-in when staff want to wheel the cot straight in, and choose side load when the room is shallow but wide.
4 to 10 bodies
The 2-door cabinets split the load so each door opening exposes only half the box. Vault coolers give every body its own door and tray, which suits hospitals and medical examiner offices that track each case separately. Vaults need 208–230V service.
12 bodies and up
The 12- and 15-body vaults use remote split refrigeration on three-phase power. Above that, a walk-in with end-load, side-load or cantilever racks is usually the most space-efficient answer; see how many bodies fit in a walk-in cooler.
Short-term vs. long-term holding
Coolers hold 34–40°F. For storage measured in months, specify a freezer; see morgue cooler vs. morgue freezer.
Measure before you choose
- Room length, width and ceiling height. On uprights, add the cabinet, the cooling unit and 16″ of clearance above the unit.
- Every door width and turn on the delivery path. Vaults, the 4BX and the 2-door cabinets arrive as panel kits.
- Lift platform heights against the lowest and highest storage positions.
- Electrical service available at the location: 115V or 208–230V, single- or three-phase.
- Peak weekly case count, not the average.
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest AMC mortuary refrigerator?
Two bodies. The 2BX upright has an 89 by 44 by 65 inch cabinet and plugs into a 115V outlet. Two-body roll-in and vault formats are also available.
Is there a 4-body bariatric upright?
Yes. The 4BX is AMC's 4-body upright, and it is built on the 44-inch bariatric-width cabinet with 850 lbs per tier.
When should I choose a vault cooler over an upright?
Choose a vault when each body needs its own door and tray, or when you need 6 to 15 positions in a cabinet. Choose an upright for 2 to 4 bodies on a 115V plug-in system.
At what capacity does a walk-in make sense?
Beyond about 15 bodies, a walk-in with racks usually stores more per square foot than cabinets. AMC walk-in coolers range from 6 by 8 feet to 20 by 40 feet.
