How Many Isolation Gowns Does a Funeral Home Need? Embalming Gown Case Planning by Call Volume
Running out of gowns mid-week is avoidable. A simple estimate based on your call volume tells you how many cases of 100 to order and how many to keep in reserve.

The basic formula
Gowns per month = (embalmings × staff per embalming) + (removals × staff per removal) + other uses
"Other uses" covers dressing and casketing, identification viewings, cleaning the prep room and torn or soaked gowns that get swapped mid-case. Many operations add about 10–20% for these. Your own records are the best guide.
Worked examples
| Operation | Monthly estimate | Order |
|---|---|---|
| 20 embalmings (1 staff), 30 removals (2 staff), +15% | (20 + 60) × 1.15 ≈ 92 gowns | 1 case per month |
| 50 embalmings (1–2 staff, avg 1.5), 70 removals (2 staff), +15% | (75 + 140) × 1.15 ≈ 247 gowns | 3 cases per month |
| Regional care center: 150 cases (2 staff), 200 removals (2 staff), +15% | (300 + 400) × 1.15 ≈ 805 gowns | 8–9 cases per month |

How much to keep on hand
A common rule is one month of normal use on the shelf plus a reserve for surges. For mass-fatality and pandemic planning, see the mass fatality PPE stockpile guide. Store cases off the floor, in a cool, dry place, and rotate oldest stock first.
